Why Milling Tungsten Demands Unmatched Precision

An authoritative analysis of tungsten alloys, refractory metals, and the engineering principles required for macro industrial machining.

Extreme Density & Mass Management

Tungsten (W) features a density of 19.25 g/cm³, comparable to gold. This makes it crucial for weight balance, vibration damping in aerospace rotors, kinetic energy penetrators, and high-performance automotive ballasts where space is limited but mass is critical.

Thermal Performance & Shielding

With a melting point of 3,422°C (the highest of all non-alloyed metals) and exceptional thermal conductivity, tungsten components operate flawlessly in semiconductor ion-implantation chambers, glass-to-metal seals, and high-heat aerospace engine components.

Brittle-to-Ductile Transition

Milling pure tungsten requires specialized parameters due to its high hardness and low room-temperature ductility. Our engineering teams configure strict spindle speeds, custom rake angles, and specific coolant compositions to mitigate tool wear and micro-cracking.

Strategic Applications of Machined Tungsten Alloys

From aerospace defense to medical instrumentation, high-purity tungsten is the bedrock of modern micro-engineering.

Aerospace & Defense Ballast

Tungsten’s high volumetric density provides optimal weight distribution for commercial flight controls, aircraft stabilizers, and gyroscope rotors. Its physical resilience protects flight-critical telemetry devices from vibration and shock.

Medical Radiation Shielding

Due to its superior linear attenuation coefficient, tungsten is utilized in collimators, PET syringe shields, and isotope containers, providing eco-friendly protection without the environmental toxicity of traditional lead-based alternatives.

Semiconductor Ion Implantation

Within semiconductor fabrication, tungsten components act as high-purity shielding for beamlines, cathode cups, and ion sources. The low outgassing rate of high-density tungsten keeps vacuum environments clean during wafer processing.

Uncompromising Standards

Metrology & Inspection Architecture

Quality is the bedrock of the manufacturing industry. We firmly believe that only by controlling quality well can we survive, develop, and continue to grow. Since 2014, we have continuously optimized our processes and upgraded our testing equipment.

We utilize Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), optical comparators, ultrasonic defect detectors, and digital roughness gauges to evaluate every product batch. From inspecting raw raw materials to final dimensional checks, our QA team strictly adheres to tolerances down to the single-digit micrometer range.

Our Quality Core Values: Adherence to strict geometric tolerances, trace materials tracking, and comprehensive post-process documentation for all critical aerospace and medical components.

Knowledge Base

Frequently Asked Technical Questions

Detailed engineering insights regarding our tungsten milling, CNC machining, and investment casting capabilities.

What makes tungsten machining more difficult than titanium or stainless steel?
Tungsten is a refractory metal with an extremely high melting point and low room-temperature ductility. This makes it highly abrasive to cutting tools, causing rapid tool wear. Unlike titanium, which is tough and gummy, tungsten behaves brittly under standard cutting conditions, requiring specialized tools, precise feed speeds, and thermal management to prevent fracturing.
Which grades of tungsten alloys do you process?
We process pure tungsten (99.95%), tungsten heavy alloys (W-Ni-Fe and W-Ni-Cu alloys, typically containing 90% to 97% tungsten), and tungsten carbide. The binder phase in heavy alloys significantly improves machinability compared to pure tungsten, making it ideal for balance weights and radiation shielding.
What tolerances can your CNC machining workshop achieve?
For CNC milling and turning, our standard tolerances are within ±0.01mm. With optimized precision tools, we can achieve tolerances down to ±0.005mm on critical features, depending on the material geometry and thermal requirements of the component.
Do you provide material certifications for custom metal orders?
Yes, every production run is accompanied by raw material certifications. We provide chemical composition reports, mechanical property test data, and, where applicable, ultrasonic or non-destructive test documentation to guarantee reliability.
How does Dongguan SX Technology Co., Ltd control production quality?
Our quality control protocols span raw material validation, in-process inspections using automated CMMs, and final pre-shipment verification. We operate according to strict quality guidelines established since our inception in 2014, ensuring each batch meets the specifications of our global clients.
Can you assist with low-volume prototyping and mass production?
We support the entire product life cycle. Our facility is equipped to handle rapid prototyping for engineering trials as well as multi-axis production runs for components made of titanium, stainless steel, aluminum, and refractory alloys.
